I'm not even sure there is enough space in this newsletter to describe how excited we are about this deal. Let's set aside the fact that 2004 was, as I like to say, a sickdiculous (this is a good thing) vintage in Rioja. Let us instead focus on the winery - Bodegas Remirez de Ganuza. Ganuza is a benchmark estate in Spain, and owns over 100 acres of 33-100 year old vines. While some Rioja producers have been churning out the hits for over 100 years, Ganuza's first wine was only in 1992. Ganuza was the first to harvest in small baskets in the region, and also the first to separate out the shoulders and tips of the grape bunches to preserve only the best grapes for the top wines. They were also the first winery in the region to use water bags for pressing to reduce oxidation. Innovation leads to superstar wines and starting with the epic 2001 vintage Remirez da Ganuza started getting some insane global press attention.
That brings us to the 2004 Fincas de Ganuza. 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano from 40 year old vines that is aged for minimum 3 years before release...all for $25?
