2010 Chateauneuf du Pape!

The hype surrounding the arrival of the 2010 Rhone wines is currently at a fever pitch. We quietly put many of the following wines on our website 4 weeks ago as a pre-sale opportunity and sold out of two items in less than 48 hours. Realizing we have to make sure all our Charlotte peeps were aware of the offer, we wanted to send out a newsletter with the wines. Here is an amazing offer of 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape from Eric Solomon Selections, all for you at the lowest prices in the US.

From Tanzer to Robinson to Parker, all the wine world glitterati (including our own Doug Frost) are in agreement that 2010 was an outstanding vintage. What is also well documented is that quantities produced in 2010 are as low as we have ever seen them. Take Marcoux Vieilles Vignes for example...they produced about 240 cases...for the entire world. Out of that tiny number you don't even want to know how many are coming to NC (it ain't a lot).

We have not tasted these gems yet (although this is Secretariat grade pedigree here people) so we have included tasting notes from wine reviewer Robert Parker to help you make your purchasing decisions.

This is a pre-sale opportunity - we expect the wine to arrive in early July.

Notes from Parker: A potential candidate for perfection is the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin, which may turn out to eclipse my favorite Chaupin to date, the 2007, and closely behind it, the 2009. Dense blackish/purple, with extraordinary intensity, precision and focus, this wine is very backward due to the higher acids in this vintage, but has a layered, skyscraper-like texture and a stunning nose of kirsch, black raspberries, lavender, and spice box. Some licorice also makes an impression. Enormously concentrated yet relatively delicate and light on its feet for a wine that is probably 15%-plus in alcohol and as concentrated as this is, it should be a future legend of Chateauneuf du Pape and evolve for 20-25 years.

Notes from Parker: The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape is a more restrained wine, and Christophe Sabon surprised me when he said, “It has the fruit of 2003 and the acidity levels of 2006.” It is a much more reserved wine, with an inky purple color, loads of black fruits, smoke, and earth, very good acidity and moderate tannin. This blend of 75% Grenache, 15% Syrah and the rest Mourvedre displays plenty of tannin, so this wine probably does need 4-5 years of cellaring to shed some of its structure. It should drink well for 15-20 years and will certainly outlive the more precocious 2009

Notes from Parker: The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes, which comes from 90- to 100+-year-old vines and is a blend of 98% Grenache and 2% other varieties (primarily Cinsault) aged in cement, was cropped from 12 hectoliters per hectare, compared to the 2009's 15 hectoliters per hectare. That is essentially nothing short of financial suicide. This wine, which reminds the Armenier sisters somewhat of the 2001 vintage in its style, is very concentrated and has a dense purple color as well as a beautifully sweet nose of licorice, pepper, garrigue, blueberry, black raspberry and blackberry fruit. This is distinctive, compelling Chateauneuf du Pape that comes from their oldest vines, located in three of the best lieux-dits in Chateauneuf du Pape – La Crau in the eastern sector, Gallimardes in the south and Esquirons in the middle. This wine has wonderfully silky tannin, but it is definitely noticeable, and I suspect 3-5 years of cellaring is warranted. It should drink well for 20-25 years at the minimum.

Notes from Parker: The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape (74% Grenache, 14% Mourvedre, 9% Syrah and 3% Cinsault aged two-thirds in cement tanks and one-third in wood foudres) has a dense ruby/purple color, a sweet nose of floral-infused blueberry liqueur, a striking minerality, impressive concentration, and a solid, dense core of fruit and glycerin. This is a classic and potentially long-lived Marcoux that should drink well for 15 or more years.

Notes from Parker: The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Tradition (60% Grenache, a whopping 35% Syrah and 5% Mourvedre) is aged in tank (the Grenache and Mourvedre) and oak (the Syrah). This impressive, full-bodied, dense purple-colored wine reveals plenty of sweet aromas of blackberries, black raspberries, licorice, camphor and flowers. It should drink well for 15+ years.
