45% Off Some Crazy Good Rioja!

2004 Fincas de Ganuza Reserva

Lowest Price in the US: $44.99
Winestore Price: $29.99
6 Pack Price: $24.99 (net)*
SAVE 45%

I'm not even sure there is enough space in this newsletter to describe how excited we are about this deal. Let's set aside the fact that 2004 was, as I like to say, a sickdiculous (this is a good thing) vintage in Rioja. Let us instead focus on the winery - Bodegas Remirez de Ganuza. Ganuza is a benchmark estate in Spain, and owns over 100 acres of 33-100 year old vines. While some Rioja producers have been churning out the hits for over 100 years, Ganuza's first wine was only in 1992. Ganuza was the first to harvest in small baskets in the region, and also the first to separate out the shoulders and tips of the grape bunches to preserve only the best grapes for the top wines. They were also the first winery in the region to use water bags for pressing to reduce oxidation. Innovation leads to superstar wines and starting with the epic 2001 vintage Remirez da Ganuza started getting some insane global press attention.

That brings us to the 2004 Fincas de Ganuza. 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano from 40 year old vines that is aged for minimum 3 years before release...all for $25? This doesn't happen often, or ever for that matter. That is why we are so excited to be able to offer you this top flight wine at the lowest price on the planet. Currency conversions etc. etc. - you cannot buy this bottle for less, anywhere in the world.

So if you're up for some high quality juice at some super friendly prices, this is for you. We know what we are drinking tonight!!

Winner of the Caymus Special Select Blind Tasting is...

2008 Laurel Glen "Counterpoint"

Regular Price: $34.99*
SALE Price: $24.99 (net)
SAVE 29%

Only 20 cases available at this price!

Once we tallied the votes and realized Laurel Glen "Counterpoint" had won our blind tasting on Saturday, we set out to be able to offer a great deal on the wine - and boy did we get one!

Some wines you just fall in love with, whether or not they represent the best. For instance, I love Laurel Glen Winery (just as I love Ridge Vineyards and a bunch of other wineries) because I love the way their wines taste, I love the style of their wines, and I think the owner and winemaker is brilliant and represents all that the California wine industry should aspire to be. Laurel Glen's 1985 Estate and their 1990 Estate aged as well as I could ever hope the best California wines should age. Seriously. Those wines were as elegant, as seductive, and as charming as any California Cabernets I have ever had, and most other vintages of Laurel Glen Estate have been close behind

Good news is that apparently you guys have fallen in love with Laurel Glen as well. It not only received the most first place votes on Saturday - it destroyed the competition. Second place received a little more than half as many votes!

At $25 Counterpoint offers tremendous value and at nearly half the price of the Laurel Glen's Estate wine, it is a little easier on the pocketbook. I guess we could say welcome to the Laurel Glen fan club - but don't let too many people in on the secret. We don't want that price creeping up!

Taste Caymus Special Selection vs. $25 Rivals!

Taste Caymus Special Select Blind!

All Day Long!!

Featuring 2009 Caymus Special Selection  Cabernet

Can we find you a $15 wine that tastes as good as a $100 wine? Is it possible?

Time to bring out one of the big boys of California Cabernet production in a blind tasting! Tough to forget that back in January our Silver Oak blind tasting produced a superstar winner in the 2008 Rockus Bockus Red Blend - a $12.99 epic value that beat out competition at an average bottle price of $33. It almost seems unfair to all the big boy Cabs out there; I mean a Maserati is supposed to go faster than a Kia, and a $100 wine is supposed to taste better than a $25 one. Right? Well, maybe not. A wine's success isn't measured in MpH, it's measured in the taste that is transferred from the glass to your mouth. If you don't know the price, can't see the label, and can't hear someone waxing poetic in your ear about the wine's "score," then all that is left is the juice and your taste buds. It's a scary proposition for any winemaker. That's why you have marketing departments that design catchy labels, create campaigns to build a wine's image, and spend all of their time and energy essentially trying to convince consumers that a wine is great. The problem is that you can't out "market" a blind tasting.
Which is why we're playing "Find the Caymus Cabernet" this Saturday. It's simple really. The wines will all be tasted blind on our tasting machines. One of them will be 2009 Caymus Special Selection Cabernet and the others will be an assortment of wines at every price point from a number of different regions. All you have to do is taste and pick your favorite. Yes, that's right, your favorite. If that's the Caymus, then great, if not, well that's OK too. You may be surprised as to what your favorites actually are.

We hope to see you Saturday - these are always fun events!

20 cases available - wine arrives tomorrow!

Nothing says the start of summer like 95 degree heat and crazy good deals on wine. Many of you may remember the 2006 St. Supery Elu deal we ran most of last year (it was insane). Well, we worked out another doozie with the winery and this time it is from the epic 2007 vintage.

All estate grown Cabernet that's full of that intense Napa power we have all grown to know and love... for less than $20. There are not too many 2007 Napa Cabs left in the market - and I can count the ones from the 2007 vintage on one hand. This is a wonderful opportunity to get a wine from a great vintage, at a great price.

This also provides us with one more opportunity to show that while one may think bog box (Harris Teeter, Total Wine) means bigger savings, it simply is not the case.

As always, THANK YOU for your business!

There is nothing we love more than super high quality wine below $10 per bottle...and Jean Marc Lafage is a master of the inexpensive, amazing wine. He makes Novellum Chardonnay, Cote Est white, Cote Sud red, Chimeres red blend and a host of other sub $15 blockbusters. The wine press continues to heap praise on Lafage, commenting that his wines have:

- "improbable price-quality rapport"
- "taken on an aura of unreality when one sees the price!"
- "mind-boggling value"

My favorite may be specifically about the Cuvee Nicolas when one wine writer opined "The only thing over-the-top about this wine is the value it offers!"

Anyhoo, this exercise could go on for days, and who has time for such things? We're here to find you the gems of the wine world and this, my friends, at less than $10 is one of those gems.

Only 14 cases to go around, so get on board!

Taste the Best in the World!

Father's Day Tasting!
Saturday June 16th, 2012

http://gothamist.com/attachments/arts_jamie/dec511repeal.jpg

Featuring:
2009 Rene Rostaing Cote Rotie
2007 Miner Vineyards "The Oracle"
2007 Peter Michael "L'Espirit de Pavots"
2004 Muga "Prado Enea" Gran Reserva
1997 Jaboulet Hermitage "La Chapelle"
2005 La Peira
2009 Pride Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

They say that men are better than woman at math, but then the people who usually say that are men. Go figure. When it's comes to figuring, we're told that men are better with numbers, with figures (I feel a pun coming on but I'm going to back away quietly from that one), that there is something about the certitude of numerical depiction that appeals to a man. Or maybe that men are just obsessed with numbers: .300 batting averages, 50 quarterback ratings, triple doubles or maybe even a 5 handicap.

Maybe this is why the 100-point system appeals to so many men. Despite the inherent ambiguity of wine (it changes, some people like certain styles more than others), there is something so reassuring about knowing that the god of wine has assigned it a number and now you know that your cellar has thirty 95 point wines and above (and that you still don't have a 100 point wine notched on your bedpost, I mean gun).

Fret not, gentlemen, numbers mean nothing! Taste is everything (like the beer commercial says); so why not enjoy Father's Day weekend tasting some of the most delicious wines any father (or son of a father) could hope to taste?

For starters, we have one of my obsessions: 2009 Rostaing Cote Rotie. Rene Rostaing has long been a bulwark against creeping internationalization of this sacred slope (and a roasted slope it is too, as in the name). But make no mistake; he’s as modern as anybody; it’s just that he has been raised on these wines and he knows how the great old Cote Roties tasted (his uncle was the late great Marius Gentaz as in Gentaz Dervieux).  It shows in his own stuff; it’s intense but more mineral than alcohol, oak, extract and all the other characteristics that places like Napa have in spades.

And speaking of Napa, anyone care for 2007 Miner "The Oracle"? This is from a superb vintage and is just now starting to show what it's capable of showing: enormity along with elegance. Cabernet Sauvignon with healthy doses of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, this has got lots of life ahead of it. I may seem to denigrate the bigness of so many California wines (just because so many of them have nothing but size going for them), but size isn't everything, and some of my favorites offer balance in addition.

2007 Peter Michael L'Espirit de Pavots is definitely one among that number. The folks at Peter Michael make large, but not unwieldy wines. Or, as long as we're using the blockbuster adjective, how about this ain't no chick flick? Heck, it's Father's Day weekend; I should be allowed to get away with such offensive nonsense (please don't tell my wife, she’ll assign me chores.)
But the excellent reputation of both of these California beauties is pretty well known among those that count their wine trophies.

Suppose you like wines with a bit more silk than strength like the 2004 Muga Prado Enea; this is one of Rioja’s top wines and a great expression of its gentle but firm demeanor. Or back in France, we’ll also be pouring 1997 Jaboulet Hermitage La Chapelle. Amongst all Hermitages, La Chapelle ought not to be talked about in blockbuster terms; it’s far too complex for that. Don’t get me wrong; it’s no shrinking violet either.

We're also going to be pouring the wine that has most recently made people rethink everything they think they know about Languedoc: 2005 La Peira. Comprised of the grapes that are de rigeur in the southern Rhone, La Peira offers Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah in fascinatingly rich form.

And, finally this weekend, we'll offer the 2009 Pride Mountain Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon. Any sane person knows that Pride Mountain is a star; their Merlot might be the best in California. But their Cabernets are pretty juicy and attractive too. Best of all, the wines we're tasting this weekend for Father's Day are worth many, many points. How many points? Well, that's up to you. You're the numbers man.

Happy tasting and we'll see you Saturday!

$3.99 per bottle!!

2009 Agoston Red Blend!
http://www.avoidbadwine.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Agoston.jpg

Winestore Price: $3.99 (net) per bottle

$47.88 per case!

There was no way we were going to offer this wine - it was too inexpensive...there was no way it could be worth a darn. Well, we tasted this wine for the first time yesterday and changed our minds in a split second. For $3.99 per bottle (yes, you read that price correctly) this blend of Grenache and Syrah is the bomb. We bought the last 64 cases available in NC (hopefully they are going to order more!) and are pleased to be able to offer it to you today.

Is this wine going to change your life? No. Are your friends going to taste it at your next dinner party and wax poetic about it for hours and hours? No. Is this the ultimate Wednesday night cheeseburger and fries wine? Yes. Is this the ultimate pool party summer sipper? Yes. Is this the perfect...well, you get the idea here.

So - $3.99 per bottle for some tasty vino. Pretty sure I've paid that for a 12oz bottle of water at the airport.

Just an extra note - not sure if this is a great Father's Day Gift...unless Dad is super thrifty!!

2010 Chateauneuf - Janasse, Marcoux and Giraud!

2010 Chateauneuf du Pape!
http://europeancellars.com/images/home_top.jpg

The hype surrounding the arrival of the 2010 Rhone wines is currently at a fever pitch. We quietly put many of the following wines on our website 4 weeks ago as a pre-sale opportunity and sold out of two items in less than 48 hours. Realizing we have to make sure all our Charlotte peeps were aware of the offer, we wanted to send out a newsletter with the wines. Here is an amazing offer of 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape from Eric Solomon Selections, all for you at the lowest prices in the US.

From Tanzer to Robinson to Parker, all the wine world glitterati (including our own Doug Frost) are in agreement that 2010 was an outstanding vintage. What is also well documented is that quantities produced in 2010 are as low as we have ever seen them. Take Marcoux Vieilles Vignes for example...they produced about 240 cases...for the entire world. Out of that tiny number you don't even want to know how many are coming to NC (it ain't a lot).

We have not tasted these gems yet (although this is Secretariat grade pedigree here people) so we have included tasting notes from wine reviewer Robert Parker to help you make your purchasing decisions.

This is a pre-sale opportunity - we expect the wine to arrive in early July.

Notes from Parker: A potential candidate for perfection is the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin, which may turn out to eclipse my favorite Chaupin to date, the 2007, and closely behind it, the 2009. Dense blackish/purple, with extraordinary intensity, precision and focus, this wine is very backward due to the higher acids in this vintage, but has a layered, skyscraper-like texture and a stunning nose of kirsch, black raspberries, lavender, and spice box. Some licorice also makes an impression. Enormously concentrated yet relatively delicate and light on its feet for a wine that is probably 15%-plus in alcohol and as concentrated as this is, it should be a future legend of Chateauneuf du Pape and evolve for 20-25 years.

Winestore Price: $49.99 (net)

Lowest Price in USA

http://cdn.bbr.com/images/products/parents/small/11290.jpg
Notes from Parker: The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape is a more restrained wine, and Christophe Sabon surprised me when he said, “It has the fruit of 2003 and the acidity levels of 2006.” It is a much more reserved wine, with an inky purple color, loads of black fruits, smoke, and earth, very good acidity and moderate tannin. This blend of 75% Grenache, 15% Syrah and the rest Mourvedre displays plenty of tannin, so this wine probably does need 4-5 years of cellaring to shed some of its structure. It should drink well for 15-20 years and will certainly outlive the more precocious 2009

2010 Domaine Marcoux Vieilles Vignes - Order Online HERE
Winestore Price: $154.99 (net)

Lowest Price in USA

http://www.gcwines.net/shoppingcart/product_images/x/164/marcoux_vv__84793_std.jpg

Notes from Parker: The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes, which comes from 90- to 100+-year-old vines and is a blend of 98% Grenache and 2% other varieties (primarily Cinsault) aged in cement, was cropped from 12 hectoliters per hectare, compared to the 2009's 15 hectoliters per hectare. That is essentially nothing short of financial suicide. This wine, which reminds the Armenier sisters somewhat of the 2001 vintage in its style, is very concentrated and has a dense purple color as well as a beautifully sweet nose of licorice, pepper, garrigue, blueberry, black raspberry and blackberry fruit. This is distinctive, compelling Chateauneuf du Pape that comes from their oldest vines, located in three of the best lieux-dits in Chateauneuf du Pape – La Crau in the eastern sector, Gallimardes in the south and Esquirons in the middle. This wine has wonderfully silky tannin, but it is definitely noticeable, and I suspect 3-5 years of cellaring is warranted. It should drink well for 20-25 years at the minimum.

Notes from Parker: The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape (74% Grenache, 14% Mourvedre, 9% Syrah and 3% Cinsault aged two-thirds in cement tanks and one-third in wood foudres) has a dense ruby/purple color, a sweet nose of floral-infused blueberry liqueur, a striking minerality, impressive concentration, and a solid, dense core of fruit and glycerin. This is a classic and potentially long-lived Marcoux that should drink well for 15 or more years.

Lowest Price in USA

Notes from Parker: The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Tradition (60% Grenache, a whopping 35% Syrah and 5% Mourvedre) is aged in tank (the Grenache and Mourvedre) and oak (the Syrah). This impressive, full-bodied, dense purple-colored wine reveals plenty of sweet aromas of blackberries, black raspberries, licorice, camphor and flowers. It should drink well for 15+ years.
