We are not big on lists, or forced rankings or anything like that - but for the last four years we have had some fun in choosing a "wine of the year". It usually isn't our best selling wine, instead it is a wine that stopped us in our tracks. It has been a wine that made us think "Dang, this is crazy good for the money!!" It has to have a good package, amazing taste and the right price. The wine that met all that criteria and stopped us cold this year was the 2011 Lafage Tessellae GSM from Jean Marc Lafage. Jean Marc Lafage seems to be the master of the inexpensive wine, so I guess we should not have been so surprised when we tasted this beauty.
Lafage is the winemaker behind superstar red blend Bastide Miraflors, the hottest selling rose of the year Miraflors Rose, one insane bottle of $9.99 red wine called Espelt as well as other wines like Novellum, Lafage Cote Est, Cote Sud, Tessellae Carignan and Cuvee Nicolas. Important to also note all of these wines reside in our 2013 best sellers list and not a one of them costs more than $14.99.
This blend of 40% Grenache, 40% Syrah, 15% Mourvedre and 5% Grenache Gris is rich, full bodied easy drinking red wine. It FAR outdrinks it's price point and is essentially, in our minds, a baby Chateauneuf du Pape (without the Chateauneuf price!). So, you can let other publications tell you how awesome that $90 Barolo they drink was on their best wines of the year list. Or perhaps that $115 Cabernet. For those of you who win the $600 million tonight in the Mega Millions, we hope your life is filled with $100 wines every night. Should we not win, we're gonna stick with this wine :)
