We are not big on lists, or forced rankings or anything like that - but for the last three years we have had some fun in choosing a "wine of the year". It usually isn't our best selling wine, instead it is a wine that stopped us in our tracks. It has been a wine that made us think "Damn, this is crazy good for the money!!" It has to have a good package, amazing taste and the right price. The wine that met all that criteria and stopped us cold this year was the 2009 Artai from Closa Batllet. 2009 is the inaugural vintage for this wine, so you probably had never seen it before, but man 'o man is this stuff good.
We tasted it for the first time back in August and bought all we could get our hands on after the first sip. This blend of 47% Grenache, 28% Carignan, 23% Cabernet and 2% Syrah isn't a shy wine, as it clocks in at a heft 15% alcohol...but you won't notice it a bit as you polish off the bottle (although you might the next morning). It is a rich, dense Priorat from a brilliant vintage, and at a price that's a remarkable value. That's because Artai is the young vines version of the other great Closa Batllet estate bottlings in Priorat. So instead of century old vines, these vines are just a bunch of rowdy youngsters at about 40 years of age.
So maybe you're looking for some unique gifts for clients, maybe you are looking for a great wine at a great price or maybe you need something to drink tonight before you try and brave the mall tomorrow. Out of the thousands of wines we have tasted this year (I know, someone has to do it!), this is the one that really knocked our socks off. We hope you agree!
