With everyone looking for bargains these days we have put together what we think could be one of our most exciting and revealing tastings to date! Every year across the world some of the best wineries have leftover grapes, or have juice that simply does not make the cut to go into their flagship wines. “Second Wines”, as they are called, are wines that are made from grapes that grow in the same vineyards, they are made by the same winemakers, and in some cases they even age in the same barrels as the Estate wines.

The funny thing is that the difference in price between the flagship wine and the “second” label is usually pretty substantial.

Therefore we have put together a tasting featuring wonderful estate wines and their less expensive counterparts. You’ll get to taste for yourself whether the extra $$$ is actually worth paying. Our participants are:

The 2007 Domaine "La Garrigue" is not only our best selling wine of 2009, it is also one of the most talked about sub $15 wines on the planet right now. 2007 has turned out to be a blockbuster vintage in the Southern Rhone and the quality of even the least expensive wines is phenomenal.

Our blind tastings have been a huge hit recently but we have been asked over and over again to do a blind tasting focusing on multiple grape varietals but with affordable wines. Soooo - this weekend we will be tasting 24 wines blind all arranged by grape varietal. There will be the following wines available:

Looks German, hunh? It's not; it's from Alsace, which is very French (in a Germanic way). This is a grape people associate with Italy (they call it Pinot Grigio there), but instead of Italy's crisp, neutral style, Alsace Pinot Gris is unctuous, earthy and filled with honey.
