It's that time again. We have secured another crazy deal on some crazy good wine - and this time it is fully mature wine from the 2001 vintage! We're not allowed to publicly tell you what the wine is going to be (you're going to have to come into the store and see for yourself!), but what we can tell you is that the savings are monumental, the winery is top flight, the winemaker is one of the best in the world, the vintage is awesome, and the juice is outstanding. Not enough to get you excited? How about this:

Right now, the lowest price in the USA on the Merlot is $40.00 - So we are bringing this to you at $15 less per bottle or 36% off the lowest price in the USA.
I mean, that is CRAZY!

So yes, this Saturday we are tasting a mystery wine - and while it is  not exactly priced at what we would call an "everyday drinker", any time I can buy a share of Berkshire Hathaway for the price of a share of Sprint, I usually don't pass it up!

Swing in this Saturday from 2-4pm, drink some amazing juice, and have a great time!

We have not been able to bring one of our favorite and most unique red wines, Niepoort Twisted, into NC since the 2006 vintage. Well, two months ago we found out all the appropriate paperwork had been processed and we were back in business!

Dirk Niepoort is the madman of Portugal; he really is. His escapades have become legendary, but his wines excuse all scandalous behavior. His wines are seriously good. In Twisted, Niepoort continues to expand the possibilities of unfortified wines being produced in Portugal.  "Twisted" is a happy little field blend of Port grapes that is big on fruit and low on attitude.

Couple of key bits about this little gem. 1) It's only $14.99 - that is right in my wine budget kill zone 2) It is crazy unique and something you are going to be able to impress your wine snob friends with..and 3) the label is a cartoon drawn by famed cartoonist Bill Plympton (who doesn't love the funny pages!).

We have "Twisted" on the machine right now to taste, just in case you don't trust us or something...but we are here to tell you, this wine rocks!

Blind Taste Belle Glos Against $20 Rivals!

Blind Taste Belle Glos Clark & Telephone!
Saturday April 21st, 2012
11am - 8pm

https://d294fov128l8bc.cloudfront.net/t:420x420C/$/foods/photos/4f4dbd8d511dc12f01005c6b/original_1330494870.jpeghttp://clclt.com/binary/c5d7/1324336780-wine_and_food_weekend.png

We've been getting in some absolutely stunning values in Pinot Noir over the last few weeks - but how do they stack up against 2010 Belle Glos Clark & Telephone, one of the most popular high end Pinot Noirs in California? We wanted to find out by playing a little game, so this Saturday we will be tasting the Belle Glos blind against 7 other rivals all on the tasting machine. Belle Glos is a side project (to put it lightly) for Chuck Wagner, founder of Caymus Vineyards. They make full throttle Pinot Noir and top it off with a wax seal on their bottle that is more familiar to drinkers of Makers Mark than it is to drinkers of fine wine.

If you don't know the price, can't see the label, and can't hear someone barking in your ear about the wine's "score," then all that is left is the juice and your taste buds. It's a scary proposition for any winemaker. That's why you have marketing departments that design catchy labels, create campaigns to build a wine's image, and spend all of their time and energy essentially trying to convince consumers that a wine is great. The problem is that you can't out "market" a blind tasting.

Which is why we're playing "Find the Belle Glos" this Saturday. It's simple really. Eight wines will all be tasted blind. One of them will be 2010 Belle Glos Clark & Telephone Pinot Noir and the others will be an assortment of wines at every price point from a number of different regions. All you have to do is taste and pick your favorite. Yes, that's right, your favorite. If that's the Belle Glos, then great, if not, well that's OK too. You may be surprised as to what your favorites actually are.

Get ready to taste some amazing Pinot Noir!

California Chardonnay Taste-Off!

California Chardonnay Taste Off!
Saturday April 14th, 2012
11am-8pm

http://www.winemonger.com/catalog/winemonger-talk/wp-content/chardonnay_sign.jpg

Featuring:
2010 Rombauer Chardonnay
2008 Trefethen "Harmony" Chardonnay
2010 Plumpjack "Reserve" Chardonnay
2010 Wente "Morning Fog" Chardonnay
2009 Trefethen "Double T" Chardonnay
2009 Duckhorn "Migration" Chardonnay
2010 Salmon Creek Chardonnay
2009 Lyeth Chardonnay

Chardonnay is the most popular variety among U.S. wine drinkers. That, rather obvious, fact is all too often ignored by wine geeks who love to smirk about their latest “ABC” infatuation. “Anything but Chardonnay” may describe the interest level of many jaded wine aficionados, but it doesn’t speak to most wine drinkers. For most, Chardonnay is plenty tasty, and good values abound. Of all those Chardonnay lovers out there, it is the rich and buttery Chardonnay - the character that defines California - that gets people really excited.

Look, let's be honest; it's cool to bash California Chardonnay because it's too big, rich and fat to go with food. Food, schmood. How about we just admit that big, rich, and fat California Chardonnay is delicious to drink!!

In the interest of promoting how delicious these wines truly are, we decided that we all need to taste some of the greatest Chardonnays coming out of California, against each other, in an epic California Chardonnay taste off. We'll line all the wines up on the machine and let the grading begin. Each taster will be able to rate the wines 1-8 (1 being their favorite) and we will release the results next week (with perhaps a deal on the winner!)

If you are like us and love a great Cali Chard, then be sure to stop in on Saturday.

See you Saturday and Happy Tasting!

Charles Smith Cabernet for $14.99!

2009 Chateau Smith Cabernet
http://www.cabcritic.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/IMG_0298.jpg

Winery Price: $20.00 (Click HERE to see)
Winestore Price: $14.99 (net)
SAVE 25%

Only 20 cases available at this price!

Our distributor called us this week offering us a fun deal on their last 20 cases of Chateau Smith. At this price it was a no brainer! This is full throttle Cabernet from Charles Smith. Yes, Charles may be a bit crazy (that may come from his days managing rock bands in Amsterdam) but he also happens to be one of the most promising winemakers in the United States.

The wine market is such a funny place. Each of us observers are confident that there are few new ideas; we will repeat certain platitudes ad nauseum: that the best way to make a small fortune in the wine business is to start with a large one; that only the largest wineries can garner any attention from the wholesalers; that you have to be lucky to get anywhere. Okay, I'm sticking with that last one.

You've got to be damn lucky, that's for sure, though as they say, you make your own luck. But a small winery in eastern Washington with no big marketing budget, no big budget at all in fact, has proven that maybe you can make it if you try, as Sly Stone used to sing. Charles Smith of K Vintners has more or less thrown the playbook against the wall and tried everything you can imagine: high end single vineyard wines, regional blends to a price point, purchased and/or blended wines with funny labels and goofy names, and maybe a few consulting gigs.

And Smith has succeeded, probably beyond his wildest dreams. His Kung Fu Girl Riesling is hot stuff, seemingly on every wine by glass list. His labels with black block printing on white, looking more like tattoos than wine labels, just keep proliferating: The Creator, Boom Boom Syrah, Chateau Smith, Kung Fu Girl,  and Eve. His K Vintners wines remain powerful and delicious examples of Washington wines. And he did all with hard, honest work. Oh, yeah, and some luck.

Well, we want you to be happy, and therefore we have put together what we think is an incredibly fun lineup of special occasion Cabernet bottles (Snowden) and ones to share with the family this Easter Sunday (Leese Fitch, Twenty Bench).

Cabernet is a special grape for many people - it may have helped facilitate their entry into red wine, it may bring back fond memories of trips to Napa with friends and family, it may be the wine you drank on the evening you got engaged. Well, if you are one of these many people (and we fall into these categories) this is a tasting for you. We've got Cab at all price points, made in all styles, from all different regions and we'll even throw in some special stuff just because we are cool like that :)

So swing on in Saturday, take a break from the Masters, bring the family that is in town for Easter weekend and enjoy some great juice.

We hope to see you then and, as always, THANK YOU for your business - we appreciate it!
