Featuring:
2010 Orin Swift "The Prisoner"
2010 Orin Swift "Abstract"
2009 Orin Swift "Saldo"

The NEW vintage of Orin Swift's runaway hit "The Prisoner" is arriving tomorrow and to celebrate we are putting it up on the machine for all of you to try on Saturday! Over the last 8 years, Orin Swift has cemented itself in place as one of the most popular wineries in California. While relatively expensive at $35, it still delivers a powerhouse blow of power and fruit that many usually find in wines at twice the price.

In addition to the Prisoner, the good folks at Orin Swift launched a Cabernet called "Abstract" last year that sold out at the winery before our distributor could even get a bottle. Well, we're getting some this year (albeit not much) and for good measure we're going to throw it in the tasting as well (why not!). Throw in the bombastic Zinfandel blend called "Saldo" and you've got a lineup of fruit bombs sure to please as we head into one of the coldest weather weekends we've had so far this fall.

Not into Orin Swift? Never fear! We're going to put some new Cabernet & Zinfandel blends from producers like Gundlach Bundschu into the tasting that are priced at a more friendly $12.99. As always, we're trying to have in a little something for everyone at every price point!

As always, we thank you for your business and we hope to see you this weekend!

One of the Rarest Pinots in the US

One of the Rarest Pinots in the Country

For the first time in our short history, we have been able to spend the entire year selling T. Solomon Wellborn Pinot Noir. Up until this year, our annual allocation of this wine was a meager 5-10 cases PER YEAR. Unfortunately, only 100 cases of the 2009 T. Solomon Wellborn were produced and they are not going to sell the wine outside of California (Booo!). To ease our pain (and yes, there was a fair amount of pain), the fine people at Tantara have released what was left of the 2008 vintage to all of you, the wonderful customers at winestore. Only 100 cases are coming our way (and then it's lights out until October 2012) so if you are a T. Solomon fan, this is your chance to get a little stockpile going.

What is the story behind the T. Solomon label? Well, as you may know, Tantara Winery has an impeccable reputation as being one of California's premier Pinot Noir producers. Its flagship wine Evelyn’s Cuvee, priced at a not so friendly $80 per bottle is cherished by Pinot Noir aficionados around the nation. After selecting the barrels that go into its single-vineyard Pinot program – Pisoni, La Colline, Rio Vista (bottlings that range in price from $40 to $70 each) -- there will be a small number left over that just don’t quite make the "cut". If there are enough of them to make a few hundred cases, winemaker Jeffrey Fink bottles them under the T. Solomon Wellborn label. Director of Sales Ernie Vandegrift, over the last four years, has allowed winestore. to be the only retailer outside of California to sell this wine (and one of only two in the USA).

So there you have it...enjoy this last little bit of one of our absolute favorites! Hopefully we'll get some 2010 T. Solomon next year!!

We know there are some Chardonnay lovers out there - and this one is for you. A quick search online showed us that there is not one 2008 Chardonnay from the famed Pouilly Fuisse region available in the United States for less than $14.99. That is why we are thrilled to be able to bring you this crisp, clean, and (at $9.99) amazingly priced Chardonnay from superstar producer Georges Duboeuf. We've had a pretty good run of crazy values as of late, but for the most part many of them have been red wines (Cycles Gladiator Belle Epoque for $6.99 anyone?). So, if you are a white wine fan, and love you some Chardonnay that isn't beaten down with loads of oak and butter, this is a must buy for you.

2009 Michael David Petite Petit
2009 Pennywise Petite Sirah

2007 Meyer Family Syrah (just for fun!)
2009 Leviathan (made by the winemaker from Screaming Eagle!)

We LOVE us some Petite Sirah, and we love blends made of Petite Sirah, and we love wines that act like Petite Sirah, and...you get the picture.

PS has a lot of what people have been looking for in wine - it is big wine, and in some cases it is BIG to the nth power. It has a beautiful dark color and usually is bursting with all sorts of beautiful black cherry and berry flavors. It's basically the perfect wine to drink as it begins to turn cold again (is it really the end of October?) - it will warm you right back up!

We're pulling out all the best Petite Sirah we could find this weekend. We'll have the killer 2007 Shafer Relentless, the best Petite ringer you've never heard of in the 2009 Leviathan, the blockbuster Petite from Michael David, and then plenty of great ones for your everday consumption - Pennywise and Tierra Divina among others.

So stop on in this weekend, try some wonderful Petite Sirah (as well as some other fun goodies on the machine!) and enjoy the end of October in style. You might also just find that crowd pleaser you've been looking to serve at your Halloween party next weekend!

As always, thank you for your business and we'll see you this weekend!

2007 Meyer Family Syrah
2010 Meyer Family Chardonnay
NV Meyer Family Port

What's the big complaint about Robert Parker? Lots of people are probably motivated by little more than jealousy, but many believe that there is something inherently wrong with one man having so much power in the marketplace. Query many of those folks a bit more and you find that they wouldn't mind owning that sort of power; they just don't like what Parker does with his power. So they aren't being honest: it's not that one man shouldn't have power, it's that THIS man shouldn't have that much power.

Sounds like sour grapes to me. Parker's affection for big, unctuous red wines is legendary and despite the fact that he tastes tens of thousands of wines each year, he knows exactly what he's looking for and if he likes something, it's undeniably cut from that loud and powerful cloth.

Not everybody wants wines of such intensity; but Parker's success is proof that plenty do and if they are looking for one of the famous names among these powerhouses, they could do worse than purchase Meyer Family Bonny's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon.

The eponymous Meyer family includes Bonny Meyer, for whom the Bonny's Vineyard is named. Bonny's Vineyard was, as you probably know, the most sought-after wine in the Silver Oak stable. Bonny's late husband Justin Meyer had named the vineyard for her, and it was the jewel in the crown that Justin Meyer crafted at Silver Oak. In 1991, he stopped making a single vineyard wine, insisting that silver Oak's worldwide popularity made it too troublesome to continue to make a 400 case production wine, with every customer assuming that they could buy access to that limited production wine.

Justin's son finally talked the family into returning to a Bonny's Vineyard Cabernet in 2001; Justin Meyer passed away suddenly in 2003 and never saw the release of the wine. The 2005 is the third release of that wine, and the Meyer family thinks it's not as big and full-throttle as many of Napa's most famous and Parker-awarded wines. Perhaps they're right; the alcohol is only 14% and that's modest these days. But perhaps it's a matter of context. The 2005 Bonny's isn't shy and that should suit the lovers of the big, unctuous red wine style, the ones who remember the Silver Oak Bonny's of old, just fine.

Happy Tasting and we'll see you on Wednesday,

Here at Winestore we taste a lot of wine searching for the next big thing. And when we say "a lot" of wine, we're talking enough to fill up a swimming pool every couple weeks (tough life!). Several weeks ago we had an old friend reach out and introduce us to Owen Roe Winery. Simply put, these wines are awesome. Many people out there on the street are saying Owen Roe is the next Orin Swift (The Prisoner, anyone?), and we might just have to agree! Owen Roe has a lineup of reds that are just as tasty, robust & a heck of lot cheaper than their Orin Swift competition.

We were so impressed with this lineup, we convinced Merritt Olson, nation sales director for Owen Roe, to come to Charlotte on Thursday night and pour her four favorite reds for FREE! There's a little something for everyone - Full bodied Cabernet? Check. Bombastic red blends? Check. High end $50 show stoppers? Check.

We'll be pouring the following four reds at both winestore locations, Southpark & Blakeney, from 6-8pm on Thursday night so go ahead and call all of your friends to let them know they now have plans for a FREE Thursday night wine tasting.

Blind Taste Merry Edwards vs. $25 Rivals!

Blind Taste Merry Edwards Pinot Noir
Saturday October 8th, 2011
11am - 8pm

We've been getting in some absolutely stunning values in Pinot Noir over the last few weeks - but how do they stack up against the icons of California Pinot Noir? So it is time for our 4th Annual Merry Edwards Blind Tasting, featuring 2008 Merry Edwards Russian River Pinot Noir blind against 7 other rivals. Merry Edwards Pinot is one of the best known and most sought after California Pinot Noirs on the market today, and now it is time to put it to the test.

If you don't know the price, can't see the label, and can't hear someone barking in your ear about the wine's "score," then all that is left is the juice and your taste buds. It's a scary proposition for any winemaker. That's why you have marketing departments that design catchy labels, create campaigns to build a wine's image, and spend all of their time and energy essentially trying to convince consumers that a wine is great. The problem is that you can't out "market" a blind tasting.

Which is why we're playing "Find the Merry Edwards" this Saturday. It's simple really. Eight wines will all be tasted blind on our tasting machine. One of them will be 2008 Merry Edwards Russian River Pinot Noir and the others will be an assortment of wines at every price point from a number of different regions. All you have to do is taste and pick your favorite. Yes, that's right, your favorite. If that's the Merry Edwards, then great, if not, well that's OK too. You may be surprised as to what your favorites actually are.

Get ready to taste some amazing Pinot Noir!

Wine arrives tomorrow!

When we first tasted this wine, we knew it was going to be a hit with all you Zinfandel lovers our there (calling all Klinker Brick Fans). While we may have loved the wine, I could not figure out why a wine called "Predator" had a ladybug on the label. I mean, when we think of Predator we think Arnold Schwarzenegger, not a ladybug landing on our arm during a summers walk. We soon found out that Predator Zin is made without the use of pesticides in the vineyard. How does one protect the vineyard and cultivate grapes without the use of pesticides? You guessed it - ladybugs. Apparently the ladybug is considered a predatory insect...who knew! Anyhoo - that's the story...

So enjoy this bombastic Zinfandel, which contains a little Petite Sirah and Syrah for good measure, at a rock bottom price! We'll have bottles up on the machines starting today through the weekend so you can check this bad boy out for yourself.

As always, we appreciate your business!
